PACIFIC PUZZLE DESIGNS PERFECTION WITH MATSUURA AND CAMPLETE TRUEPATH

St. Paul, MN (August 9, 2018) — (Customer Testimonial provided by CAMPlete)

Lee Krasnow is widely regarded by puzzle collectors as one of the world’s best designers and craftsmen of interlocking geometric puzzles and secret opening boxes.

Working for an architect as a model builder in his teens, he can still recall one quote that his boss would tell him: “Perfection is mandatory, 99 percent isn’t good enough.” Starting as a self-employed puzzle maker at the age of 21, his reputation as a designer and experience as a CNC Machinist earned him a spot in the Artist in Residence position at the Autodesk Pier 9 workshop.  Autodesk reached out to Lee to create a puzzle that would be distributed as a gift to executives touring the workshop.

Each individual puzzle piece is made from a different kind of material, through different types of production processes. “Subtractive” pieces are made from 6061 aluminum billet, cut into rectangular lengths with a band saw, and then run through a series of two CNC milling operations on a Matsuura MX-330 5-Axis Vertical Machining Center.

The MX-330 provides affordable and reliable unmanned 5-axis production. Delivering machining center versatility with a standard Matsuura-made high accuracy spindle of 15,000 RPM with 48 ft-lbs. of torque; optional 15,000 RPM with 88 ft-lbs. of torque and 20,000 RPM with 80 ft-lbs. of torque are available.

Ideal for the medical and aerospace industries and other high precision components, the MX-330 offers an easy transition from 3-Axis to 5-sided or 5-axis production. The MX-330 5-Axis Vertical Machining Center is excellent for small parts but can handle parts up to ø13” X H11.8” and weighting up to 177 lbs.

Projects such as there are examples of Lee’s commitment to finding that one percent needed to obtain perfection. One of the tools that helped him achieve this was CAMplete TruePath. Providing post-processing, verification and simulation, TruePath allows users to get the most out of their Matsuura 5-Axis Machine. Lee commented on this, noting that: “TruePath allows me to get as close as possible to catastrophe.” Adding, “CAMplete TruePath closed the feedback loop and eliminated guessing from the process, giving me the optimal solution.”

From middle school woodshop to Pier 9 work shop, constantly striving to find that one percent has taken Lee Krasnow from his modest beginnings to, as he described it, “the big leagues of manufacturing.”

The MX-330 is compactly built requiring floor space of only 6.1 ft. wide by 10 ft. long and ensures high-rigidity with a generous machining area and a table loading capacity of 177 lbs.

The machine’s maximum work envelope is D330 mm x H300 mm, with an optional D420 mm x H 300 mm. The MX-330 is designed with a RAM type structure, which offers a compact and highly durable machining platform. Available tool magazines include: standard 30 tool drum and optional 60 and 90 tool chains.

Like all Matsuura 5-axis CNC Machines, CAMplete TruePath came standard with Allen Aircrafts MX-520. This relationship between Matsuura and CAMplete, offered a complete solution of software and hardware that allowed Bill Kemble, Manufacturing Engineer at Allen Aircraft to hit the ground running from day one.
