During IMTS 2022, Matsuura showcased a turbopump nozzle machined by Keselowski Advanced Manufacturing (KAM) on their Matsuura MX-330 PC10 5-Axis Vertical Machining Center.
“The 718 Inconel part was machined on the MX-330 PC10, which allows companies to schedule high-mix/low-volume parts with moderate to longer lead-times, and exploit the automatic pallet changer with limited employee involvement,” said a Matsuura USA Spokesperson. “It is configured with ten pallets and 90 tools and allows for companies to have 5-axis Matsuura automation within the reach of all budgets.”
“Using our integrated manufacturing approach, a combination of additive and subtractive techniques, allows us to create unique features such as integrated workholding by printing in threads for 1st operation machining. This workholding method requires no additional time or effort in printing and alleviates considerable struggles on secondary operations. Using additive allows us to print geometry that is simply not attainable via traditional means. Combining additive with machining allows for end use products that are unrivaled in the industry,” says James O’Toole, VP Engineering and Sales at Keselowski Advanced Manufacturing.
O’Toole continues, “For this part at rate we can load the pallet changer of the MX-330 PC10 machine with ten of these parts to run through the weekend unattended. We also utilize Orbital machining for the machining of seal surfaces that require circumferential lay with excellent outcomes.”
About the Matsuura MX-330 PC10
The MX-330 PC10 delivers machining center versatility with a standard Matsuura-made high accuracy spindle of 15,000 RPM with 48 ft-lbs. of torque. Optional 15,000 RPM with 88 ft-lbs. of torque and 20,000 RPM with 80 ft-lbs. of torque are available.
The MX-330 with 10 pallets and 90 tools provides hand-built quality, reliability, and precision engineering. Ideal for the medical and aerospace industries and other high precision components, the MX-330 offers an easy transition from 3-Axis to 5-sided or 5-axis production and is excellent for small parts but can handle parts up to ø13” X H11.8” and weighting up to 177 lbs. It is compactly built requiring floor space of only 6.1 ft. wide by 10 ft. long and ensures high rigidity with a generous machining area and a table loading capacity of 177 lbs.
The machine’s maximum work envelope is D330 mm x H300 mm, with an optional D420 mm x H 300 mm. The MX-330 is designed with a RAM type structure, which offers a compact and highly durable machining platform. Available tool magazines include standard 30 tool drum and optional 60 and 90 tool chains.
