DURABLE GOODS ORDERS RISE ON SURGE IN AIRCRAFT

St. Paul, MN (September 4, 2019) — According to the US Commerce Department, durable goods orders rose in July thanks to a surge in commercial and defense aircraft.

Orders totaled $250.4 billion, up 2.1 percent from July, according to a monthly report. It was the second straight monthly increase. Orders rose an adjusted 1.8 percent in June.

The overall transportation equipment category gained 7 percent to $86.3 billion. Excluding transportation, new orders fell 0.4 percent. Excluding defense, orders increased 1.4 percent.

Within transportation, aircraft and parts — both commercial and defense — soared.

Orders for commercial aircraft and parts rose 48 percent last month to $10.6 billion. That compares with $7.2 billion in July and $3.6 billion in June

Orders for military aircraft and parts gained 34 percent to $3.6 billion.

Motorized vehicles and parts, also part of transportation, held its own. Orders rose 0.5 percent in July to $62.6 billion.
