St. Paul, MN (November 15, 2017) ——As Michelangelo declared, “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”
At Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc., we often wonder what Michelangelo could have accomplished with our 5-axis machining centers. Instead of a chisel, what if Michelangelo possessed a Matsuura high-speed and high-precision machining center?
According to Ian Wright with Engineering.com, whether you’re sculpting a masterpiece from marble or machining a component from titanium, the basic principle is the same: start with a block of material and remove the unnecessary bits until the target object is all that is left. Of course, the details of that process are much more complicated, especially for 5-axis machining.
Many shops assume their work does not include 5-axis. Even without simultaneous 5-axis work, such as impellers or turbines, the parts produced on a 3-axis machine will be more profitable using 5-sided machining on a 5-axis machining center.
5-axis CNC Machining is the ability of a CNC machine to move a part or a tool on five different axes simultaneously enabling the production of very complex components. 3-axis machining centers move a part in two directions (X and Y), and the tool moves up and down (Z). 5-Axis machining centers can rotate on two additional rotary axes (A and B) which help the cutting tool approach the part from all directions.
“There are numerous myths regarding 5-axis machining. Many people believe that it is difficult to program, problematic to setup and inaccurate. These are massive misconceptions,” said a Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc. Spokesperson.
“At Matsuura, we can demonstrate how easy it is to program with the use of software and off-the-shelf fixturing solutions to machine components on our extremely accurate and precise 5-axis machining centers,” the Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc. Spokesperson added.
Matsuura Machinery has over a quarter of a century of 5-axis knowledge and experience combined with our more than 80-year heritage of innovative design, development and manufacture of high-quality machining centers.
