IT TAKES A MASTERPIECE TO MILL A MASTERPIECE: MATSUURA’S 5-AXIS CNC MACHINING CENTERS

St. Paul, MN (November 15, 2017) ——As Michelangelo declared, “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”

At Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc., we often wonder what Michelangelo could have accomplished with our 5-axis machining centers. Instead of a chisel, what if Michelangelo possessed a Matsuura high-speed and high-precision machining center?

According to Ian Wright with Engineering.com, whether you’re sculpting a masterpiece from marble or machining a component from titanium, the basic principle is the same: start with a block of material and remove the unnecessary bits until the target object is all that is left. Of course, the details of that process are much more complicated, especially for 5-axis machining.

Many shops assume their work does not include 5-axis. Even without simultaneous 5-axis work, such as impellers or turbines, the parts produced on a 3-axis machine will be more profitable using 5-sided machining on a 5-axis machining center.

5-axis CNC Machining is the ability of a CNC machine to move a part or a tool on five different axes simultaneously enabling the production of very complex components. 3-axis machining centers move a part in two directions (X and Y), and the tool moves up and down (Z). 5-Axis machining centers can rotate on two additional rotary axes (A and B) which help the cutting tool approach the part from all directions.

“There are numerous myths regarding 5-axis machining. Many people believe that it is difficult to program, problematic to setup and inaccurate. These are massive misconceptions,” said a Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc. Spokesperson.

“At Matsuura, we can demonstrate how easy it is to program with the use of software and off-the-shelf fixturing solutions to machine components on our extremely accurate and precise 5-axis machining centers,” the Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc. Spokesperson added.

Matsuura Machinery has over a quarter of a century of 5-axis knowledge and experience combined with our more than 80-year heritage of innovative design, development and manufacture of high-quality machining centers.

Matsuura’s impressive strength of 5-axis machines include: the MX Series; the MAM72 Series; the CUBLEX Series; and our Linear Motor Machines.

At MATSUURA USA, we continue to pursue new innovations and technology for the future.   Our pioneering design, development and manufacture of high quality machining centers continues today with our two newest 5-axis machines that maximize new technology and provide automation solutions—the MX-330 PC10, equipped with 10 pallets and 90 tools and MX-520 PC4, equipped with 4 pallets and 90 tools.
